| Subject: How to Create your Abilities (v 1.0) Mon Feb 05, 2018 11:04 pm | |
| Greetings, If you are here, that means you probably want to know how to make abilities approval-worthy for the site. While your characters may have abilities as simple as a fire breath, just stating it as such is still not enough. We need to make sure that you can't constantly breathe fire 24/7, have a range of half the world or have fire hot enough to decompose diamond. And to do that, we will need some information about your character abilities. This guide will help give you at least the bare minimum on what is expected in an ability app before it will meet our approval standards. But if you want to learn how to make more ellaborate abilities that may be difficult to pass, feel free to open up any spoiler tags you may encounter along the way, as they will contain useful tips. Now let's get to it! -- Guide to making an abilityName. Name of your ability. Simple. You can go with a generic name or something fancier, but nothing too complex. Description Describe what your ability does. Give as much detail as you can on what effects it will have on other dragons or objects as well. Limitations of your ability must be added here, and the limitation + weakness must reflect the potency of your ability. For example, a fire ball may take up very little energy, but breathing a wall of flame may be even more exhausting and leave your character with fatigue. Duration of any positive and negative effects of your ability (if any) are to be done in posts, not in seconds or minutes. - Tip:
The more detailed your description of the ability, the more likely it will pass the approval stage, assuming you have provided adequate weaknesses and limitations. Details also eliminate any ambiguity with your abilities that would otherwise make others generalise on what is not described, and therefore may accidentally make your ability come out weaker than expected. If you are stuck, extra detail you can add include what is the toughest material the ability can cleave, if it is a pin-point ability or Area-of-effect ability, or the type of ability it is (e.g. piercing, blast, arc, status etc.) Adding 'common sense' weaknesses and limitations can also boost the chances for approval, and they include things like strained claws (if it is a clawing ability and is used repeatedly) or a headache if it is a magical ability being used repeatedly.
Please make your abilities reasonable for a dragon in any standard fantasy world. That means, no overpowered abilities like teleportation, space-time manipulation, planet-busting blasts, bullet-speed piercing magic, insta-heal, insta-recover of lost limbs, mind control etc. Put yourself in the position of potential enemies of your character's. Do you really want to face a dragon who can do all that? Try putting yourself as an enemy to your own character, and find if there are any easy counters towards that ability. If there aren't any counters, then your ability may be overpowered. If there are counters, but are not easily done, then your ability may be overpowered. If there are counters, but it is not accessible to a typical dragon (e.g. a wall of ice that can only be destroyed by a fire dragon), then it may not be accepted. There are a few exceptions to these rules, but they are extremely rare and typically accepted only in weaker abilities.
Also, avoid "One trick wonder" abilities, which are abilities that are highly overpowered but 'balanced' by over-the-top weaknesses like losing an arm or so. Because really, they aren't balanced and adding overly dramatic weaknesses will NOT ever allow overpowered abilities.
If you reeeeeally want your character to have a strong ability, feel free to try and test us staff members. Often we will provide suggestion for edits you can do if your ability is rejected, and you may then end up with a borderline OP ability. However, this is still risky, since if the ability is rejected multiple times despite numerous edits, then it may become frustrating to both you and us. To avoid having to go through multiple edits, be sure to read our reviews carefully and address all that needs to be addressed appropriately and reasonably.
Cooldown How long must your character wait before they can recast the same ability again? Remember, they have to be in posts. A good tip to making a reasonable cooldown is, the stronger the ability, the longer the cooldown. Range How far can your character's ability reach its target before dissipating? Unit of measurement should be in feet. Weaknesses How do you counter this ability? What is your ability weak against? This is different to limitations. Remember, the potency of your limitations + weaknesses must reflect the potency of your ability strengths. - Tips:
It is NOT compulsory to have both a weakness and a limitation for any ability. You can have limitations with no weaknesses, or vice versa. But they must reflect the power of your ability still.
When making a weakness, try and ensure it is accessible to most, if not all, dragons. We may make exceptions to this rule depending on the nature of the ability.
